The Chiado is Lisbon’s literary neighbourhood par excellence. It was here, among century-old cafés, bookshops and cobblestone squares, that Fernando Pessoa lived, wrote and multiplied into his heteronyms. A few steps from Largo de São Carlos, where he was born in 1888, the poet built a unique body of work that transformed 20th-century Portuguese literature.
