Fronteira Palace
The Marquises know every tile. And every story behind them.
The Palácio dos Marqueses de Fronteira is one of the most remarkable examples of 17th-century Portuguese manor architecture. Commissioned by D. João de Mascarenhas, Count of Torre and first Marquis of Fronteira, following the Restoration of Portuguese Independence (1640), the palace is distinguished by its extraordinary decorative azulejo tile programme — one of the oldest and best-preserved in the country. Its gardens, with their water mirrors, allegorical statues and tile panels depicting battles and mythological scenes, are considered unique in Europe. Still a family residence today, the palace keeps alive the spirit of one of Portugal’s oldest noble houses.
